Waitaia Track Virtual Walk

The Waitaia Track is a short walking track in the Coromandel Peninsula of New Zealand. This track provides a view of the area’s history, particularly the gold mining in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It is one of many trails that showcase both the natural beauty and historical legacy of the region.

Set in regenerating forest of kauri, rimu and nikau palms, the trail takes you through a well marked track with vibrant birdlife of tui and fantails for a serene experience of the walk. The track is well maintained and can be easily walked by people of all levels of fitness, although there may be some steps in some areas.

The Waitaia area at the back of the Coromandel Peninsula was a hub of gold mining in the late 1800s. The discovery of gold in the Coromandel Peninsula sparked a miners’ rush and the establishment of many mining operations. You can see remnants of this era along the Waitaia Track, including mining shafts and tunnels and other infrastructure. These relics are a testimony to the hard work and the transformative impact of the gold rush on the region, which saw waves of settlers come in and shape the economies of the area.

Not only do visitors come to the Waitaia Track for its historical significance, but they also get to enjoy stunning views of the surrounding areas. There are points along the trail where you will be able to see the Coromandel’s hills, coastline and dense foliage. The historical interest and the natural beauty of the Waitaia Track make it a great place for hikers, history enthusiasts and nature lovers to visit.

When walking, please do not damage the environment or the historical artifacts by leaving the path and disturbing the fragile world and the history around you. The Waitaia Track is more than just a walk in the wild; it is a trip through time that helps you understand New Zealand’s history and its landscapes.
